In 2010 while working on the Clear project in Atlanta I ran across a sandrail
that screamed FIRE!!!!
I had been talking to some friends about doing a golf car/go cart style cart to
make an art car out of and had alot of responses about just using a VW engine,
since they are so easy to work on and parts can be found everywhere. I ran into
the buggy within a week and kept an eye on it for a month before breaking down
and buying it. The paint was chipping off, but it started right up! It had a bit
of a shake if you tried to acelerate too fast, but I figured we could tone that
out.
In the process of doing some welding on the shift arm that had rotted out and was being held together with a pair of vice grips. But getting it up the driveway,
ended up being a tricky part, it was shaking VERY bad and once we got it up there we couldn't get it to turn over again. After looking at it more, it was in
dire need of a tune up, so I decided that was probably the issue and went from there.
Once getting the buggy's shift arm fixed and pulling the seats to replace, I started getting the parts needed and changed the spark plugs and wires on it and still had
issues cranking it, so I went for the distributor cap and rotor button, and still no luck. Finally ran that battery down and charged it up.
Once I got to this point it was about October 2010 and I had some medical issues that put me out of work by Dec and I am still currently healing.
I have tried to crank it since it got spring and looks like I may just need to change the gas in it. So that could be good news and I could use that
easy of a fix!
I do have a number of projects going on right now so this one is not first on my list but it probably is third or so! I will be starting this project back up soon as
the point of it is to bring to events to entertain and get the participants involved in this unique ride! I will also be working on plans for what it will end up looking
like when I am done. Stay tuned and until I have everything together that I need, I will probably hold off getting any art grants or starting any fundraisers for this project,
but you are free to support now if you feel so inclined!
